Founded by Annai EVR Maniammaiar in 1974 under the auspices of The Periyar Self Respect Propaganda Institution.
The worlds largest collection of periodicals, bound volumes and various other documents belonging to the Dravidian Movement from its inception running into about 3,36,365 pages are kept here in an orderly manner for the perusal of university students, researchers, all those who are interested in history and humanities and social activists. Nearly 1,00,000 pages have been digitized to facilitate preservation and easy reference.
Over 715 scholars have completed their research theses by using this library and currently 86 scholars are using the library and research centre for their research currently 86 scholars are using the library and research centre for their research work. Periyar Library Readers Circle has been functioning since 1976 and over 2,316 sessions have taken place so far in which experts from various fields have addressed the readers and researchers.
